The Importance of Being Earnest
Jack has a make-believe brother called Ernest, so that he can be ‘respectable Jack’ in the country and ‘wicked Ernest’ in town. Jack’s best friend, Algernon, has a make-believe invalid acquaintance called Bunbury who needs looking after when Algy needs to escape tiresome social situations. Cecily (Jack’s ward) and Gwendolen (Algy’s cousin) are both in love with Ernest. The same Ernest? Join us to find out!
First performed on the 14th February, 1895 at the St James’s Theatre in London, The Importance of Being Earnest is widely considered to be Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece. Witty, thought-provoking, funny and dark, this ‘trivial comedy for serious people’ looks keenly through a gloriously fierce, satirical lens at Victorian social hypocrisy.
BelleWood Theatre Company was established with the aim of taking free theatre to the local community while providing work experience for young actors. This year BelleWood Theatre Company have taken productions to local care homes, primary schools and a retirement village. It is very exciting to have the opportunity to reach more members of the community by performing at Missenden Abbey.

“I would just like to say what an amazing performance I watched last Wednesday of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The actors were so talented, and they did amazingly well. The costumes were great and the actor’s ability to change their voices to enhance their roles were fantastic. I would like to say that I wish the actors all the best for the future, I know they will all go far!!”
